KP Journey.
Kitten Pyramid began as a collective in 2010, the brainchild of singer-songwriter Scott Milligan and initially ranged from two to 20 members. In 2013, with two members of Paddy Considine’s band Riding the Low, they released their debut album Uh-Oh! and was recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios, birthplace to Bohemian Rhapsody and Wonderwall.
Rockfield stalwart Nick Brine produced the debut citing Milligan as one of the most creative artists he works with today, comparing his songwriting approach most closely to the Beta Band. The project also featured Procol Harum’s late guitarist Dave Ball as the Grim Reaper in their ‘English Rosa’ video.
‘Uh-Oh!’ was supported with a tour of psychiatric hospitals as documented in The Guardian by acclaimed writer Laura Barnett and was a show of support and empathy to those living with mental illness. The album was dedicated to Milligan’s late uncle Jarek, also an aspiring songwriter and a huge influence to him (“he taught me to zig when everyone else zagged”), and who lived with the condition his whole life.
BBC 6Music were quick to play tracks from the album and were featured by new band kingmakers Paul Lester in The Guardian and 6Music’s Chris Hawkins and Tom Robinson with the latter dj inviting them to support his own two week tour after a 20 year break.
The album found fans across the UK’s cultural media landscape with Mojo rating it 4/5, Classic Rock 8/10, Prog Magazine calling it “... a gloriously strange musical roller-coaster ride” and “... an eclectic romp of a debut”. The Independent claimed “...if British psychedelia is your bag, this is your new favourite band” while The Guardian named them their Band Of The Day saying “Picasso could have been at the controls” and Q Magazine and Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch made them Track of the Day and Week respectively.
Album 2: KOOZY!!
On the 2 April 2021, Milligan released ‘KOOZY!!’, this time underpinned by the spirit of his mum, Yola, who lost a short battle with Covid in 2020. “As a nurse from the age of 16, my mum spent her entire life caring for people, only to be diagnosed with MS in her fifties,” he explains. “Her last years were spent in a wheelchair, unable to do a single thing that she loved – other than eat cake and buy clothes. Yet, she was still able to laugh and remain strong, her typical attitude of ‘there’s always someone else worse-off’ prevailed.”
‘KOOZY!!’ is about life’s breathtaking, abstract beauty, balanced by almost perverse cruelty. “I love that, despite the towering elephant in the room, we can still marvel at swans made from towels, bees in jacuzzis and get pleasure from scoffing a Bounty.” All inspiration for ‘KOOZY!!’’s ten tracks.
Milligan and The Leisure Society
The album was recorded with all the members of The Leisure Society with songwriters Chris Hardy and Nick Hemming co-producing with Nick Brine. Again, the album received rave reviews with Classic Rock calling it a ‘Beautiful Album’ 8/10. Daryl Easlea of Record Collector wrote ‘There are many groups who vie for the much-vaunted tag of “the best band you’ve never heard/heard of” - but few actually are truly worthy of it. With their tremendous sense of invention and conviction, Burton-on-Trent-based Kitten Pyramid are one of the few that are.’ Mike Barnes of Hi-Fi News & Record Review Magazine also gave ‘KOOZY!!’ a 4/5 and wrote ‘Comparisons with Edward Lear, Robin Hitchcock and Brian Eno’s capricious early songs” and “Alies the sensory disorientation of psychedelia, albeit in a gentle kind of way, with the structural complexity of prog rock”

In 2021 Scott, Nick and Chris completed the final album in the Kitten Pyramid Trilogy to be released in 2022 and investigates the wider subject of humanity and its place in the world. ‘I wanted to draw attention to how we eat some animals and keep others as pets, and how we all stay so calm despite the chaos around us.’

Paid in crisps.
Johnny Sharp was the first person to review Kitten Pyramid in print for the debut album ‘Uh-Oh!’ so it seemed fitting to be the interviewer for the One Louder piece.
